Ever Wonder?

This topic actually arose when my good friend, his man, and I were walking back to the car after we had enjoyed the festivities of the West Indian Day Parade on Labor Day. I meant to post it sooner, but better late than never right? LOL Here goes.....

I was born in East Orange, but I moved out when I was 10. My friend was born in the Bronx, but he moved out when he was a kid too (can't remember the age). His question was direct and thought-provoking (as with most of his questions): how would your life be different had you lived in the inner city all your life? For me, I know for a fact that I would have more 'street smarts.' I lost that when I moved. And when I was robbed 2 1/2 years ago, having street smarts really would've come in handy.

So now I ask all of you who went through the same experience....have you ever wondered how your life would be if you lived in the inner city all your life? Would it have impacted your life positively or negatively? How/why?

This is a great question because it really has to do with class. Also, as black folks we think people are just born with street smart when it's really the way you are socialized.

I have thought about this before and I came up with, I really don't know. From the people that I know who grew up in the hood their whole life have been just as diverse as people outside. Some are the sweetest and most sincere people that I have ever met then there are others that I always keep one eye on. It is hard to say which one I would have been if not something else in between.

Hmmmm interesting. I think if my dad wouldn't of took me from my mom. I would b a totally different person. I wouldnt have the smarts, money, house, car etc all the material things. I'm from newark. I moved to union county when I was 13. I still have my street smarts. I still get respect in the streets an my swagger is still the same. I feel bad because my other siblings can't/ couldn't enjoy the finer things in life an have to live in poverty stricken areas of newark. If I was still in the hood I would have no hope an probaly b on the corner selling or working at a low income job. I try to tell my brothers an sisters Target & Walmart ($400 check) is not money lol. Want more for yourself. I'm getting emotional now I'm done. lol

positively. But that just because I think everythings can have a positive spin. I have endured child abuse, death and much more...all of which have aided in crafting the well defined, happy brother you see before me. When life hands me Lemons I make Lemon Daiquiris. (Lemon Daiquiris. What kind of punk ass drink is that?) LOL
